Like an MOT for your car, it’s essential that you book your shotgun in for a regular, yearly gun servicing. We’re here to explain what’s involved in a gun service and why it’s so important…
What is gun servicing?
A regular gun service is the best way to ensure the longevity of your shotgun. During a service, the gun will be stripped down to its individual components. A gunsmith will examine every element for potential damage and wear. The most common problems identified during gun servicing include hairline cracks in the woodwork, the gun being off the face and the main top lever and ejector springs being weakened from use. At this point, customers will be made aware of any damage and suggested repairs and quoted for the work. All internal and external parts will also be thoroughly cleaned.
Here at Sportarm at Lady’s Wood, gun servicing is carried out by Sportarm’s team of reputable gunsmiths. We recommend allowing a minimum of four weeks for your service to be completed. This time may vary depending on workloads.
Why is shotgun servicing important?
A gun service identifies emerging issues and allows you to take preventative measures before permanent damage is caused. Even if you keep on top of your general gun cleaning, it’s only natural that your gun will require some extra attention after a busy clay or game season. The inner metal work and mechanism (known as the action) probably haven’t received the same treatment as the rest of the gun, and could be congealed with grease, oil and other debris. There may even be signs of rust from exposure to rain. A gun service will take care of all of this.
We recommend booking your service at the end of the season, in the early spring months. Getting it done as soon as possible ensures there are less time-constraints, as you’re not trying to squeeze it in before your next day in the field. It also means that once your gun is returned, you can put it away safe in the knowledge that it’s ready to go by the time your pre season lesson here at Lady’s Wood rolls around.
